Urban Legend (1998)

A college student suspects a series of bizarre deaths are connected to certain urban legends.

The Urban Legend films really embodied the who’s who in celebrity youth at that time. Each film seems to feel like a classic issue of “Teen People’s: 25 Under 25” issue. Let’s take a special look at the first two. Tara Reid, Jared Leto, Joey Lawrence, and beyond. It’s almost like if you weren’t part of an ensemble youth filled horror film, you weren’t a star for the younger generations of that time. Even looking at the amazing casting of “Scream”, and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” films, most of those cast members were either starring on a hit teen show at the time or seen in some issue of “YM”, “Seventeen”, and on MTV. This level of mainstream popularity allowed these modern classic horror flicks to reach not only the core horror community, but introduce a variety of different people who may normally shy away from the genre. Making room for a new wave of horror fans.

“Urban Legend” was released in 1998 from Columbia TriStar who also distributed “I Know What You Did Last Summer” a year earlier in 1997. The formula seemed clear for commercial horror success. Cast the hottest young adults and the fans will watch. Not only does this make a great experience for the fans but the actors get to feel the scream queen and horror community love for years to come and beyond.

“Urban Legend” has the hot new younger crowd in horror, but it makes sure to pay tribute to the icons that came before them. In the opening scene Chucky himself, Brad Dourif appears as a helpful gas station attendant. Followed by an appearance by Freddy Kreuger’s, Robert Englund. Then from “Halloween 4”, Danielle Harris has one of my favorite kill scenes in the film.

This film did such a good job at being a modern classic, that a sequel came along. Filled with another youthful star studded college campus to set the tone, of course. Between both films the kill scenes are eye catching and captivating. They leave a long lasting impression the same way actual Urban Legends do.

Audriena Comeaux is an actor that has appeared in the films “ Massacre Party”, “For Jennifer”, and the upcoming “Terra Bella”, She is also featured in the weekly horror series “After Hours Cinema”. Currently she spends her time auditioning and writing. Audriena found her love for horror as a child watching “Svengoolie”. She saw the films “Slugs”, and “I Saw What You Did” and knew from that moment on she wanted to create horror. Audriena also watched  “Child’s Play” as a kid and it became her favorite horror classic of all time. While browsing cable tv one night she discovered the world of VOD entertainment within the horror community. Audriena was fascinated that there were tons of independent scary films rotating around various cable networks, on demand services, and straight to DVD selections around the globe. The fact that you can be an actor and perform in a ton of movies being watched by people from all over is such a fun experience.
