Going back to the classic that launched the trend, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) was the first commercially successful horror comedy. Since then, comedy has become a staple subgenre of horror.

Over the past twenty-five years, it has gained tremendous popularity with the Scary Movie franchise as well as genre-defying favorites like Jennifer’s Body, What We Do in the Shadows, and Get Out – I know what you might be thinking here, this isn’t a comedy, right? Well, it did receive two Golden Globe nominations in comedy categories.

The Horror Comedy genre is quite broad with varying levels, featuring a range of humor and horror elements so there is something for everyone. Just as with horror, comedy is subjective, so you decide. Personally, I have a fondness for dark humor, which can be challenging to express in everyday life. However, horror comedies allow me the freedom to laugh at some of the darkest aspects of human existence. I do not think I am alone here.

Horror comedies also provide an important and much-needed component to life – the permission to laugh at our fears. My, oh my, there are plenty of fears to go around and we all could use more joy and laughter in our lives. I scoured the internet and combed through my library’s movie collection (SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY!) to compile this list. I hope you make many discoveries to add to your watchlist and enjoy the glorious splendor of this subgenre. Happy Viewing!
