Amplifying Black Women’s Voices in Horror and Reshaping the Tradition of Chilling Winter Tales

Event Date: December 16, 2024
Location: Virtual Broadcast (Register here!)

Mourning Manor Media, in collaboration with Black Women in Horror.Org (BWiH.org), proudly presents Ghosts of Yuletide: Reclaiming a Chilling Tradition, a one-night-only virtual storytelling event that blends the eerie charm of Christmas ghost tales with the transformative power of Black women’s voices in horror literature.

This unique event revives the centuries-old custom of sharing ghost stories around the fire while celebrating the oft-overlooked contributions of Black women writers to the genre. These trailblazing authors will bring untold depth and fresh perspectives to a timeless tradition, expanding horror’s boundaries in extraordinary ways.

The evening features an all-star lineup of critically acclaimed Black women authors, including Linda D. Addison, the first African-American recipient of the HWA Bram Stoker Award® and author of How to Recognize a Demon Has Become Your Friend; Melody Cooper, an award-winning screenwriter, award-winning SFF comic author (OMNI), co-founder of Nyx Horror Collective and Horror author; Rhonda Jackson Joseph, horror academic and author of Hell Hath No Sorrow Like a Woman Haunted; L. Marie Wood, Golden Stake Award-winner and academic and author of 12 Hours; Imaginationist Crystal Connor, author of The Darkness and founder of the Cabin in the Woods Film Festival; Kenya Moss-Dyme, author of Progeny and Sick XOXO, co-founder of Black Women in Horror.Org and editor of Black Magic Women; Afrosurrealist Sumiko Saulson, Bram Stoker®-nominated author of horror romance Somnalia: The Metamorphoses of Flynn Keahi and co-creator of Black Women in Horror.Org; and Mo Moshaty, internationally celebrated horror writer of Love the Sinner: Eight Disquieting Tales Bound in Sin, lecturer, filmmaker, and producer of 13 Minutes of Horror: Sci-Fi Horror, 13 Minutes of Horror: Folklore, the EIC of NightTide Magazine and host of From Inside the House, a podcast tackling women’s trauma in horror cinema.

Event organizer Mo Moshaty shares her vision for the evening: “The tradition of ghostly Yuletide tales shouldn’t belong to one sector alone. In the hands of Black women horror authors, these stories can resonate with cultural depth and fresh perspectives, breathing new life into an age-old tradition. It’s going to be a night to remember!”

Mourning Manor Media, founded by Mo Moshaty, is a pioneering force in horror storytelling, championing marginalized voices through film critique, journalism and academia with NightTide Magazine and From Inside the House Podcast, and events and community initiatives. Black Women in Horror (BWiH.org), co-created by Kenya Moss-Dyme and Sumiko Saulson, shines a spotlight on the contributions of Black women in speculative fiction, fostering inclusivity and elevating underrepresented narratives.

Together, these organizations are redefining the horror genre by amplifying diverse voices and ensuring writers of color are celebrated and seen.
