Writer-director Alex Goyette’s Breeder is the WTF wildcard, and writer-director-producer Alphan Eseli’s Mutter: The Diary of a Mother is a distinctive spectacle premiere as part of the festival’s lineup Escape From Tribeca, highlighting the ongoing commitment to showcase its curated, diverse, and dedicated selection within the genre as Tribeca Festival marked its twenty-fifth year.

Breeder tells the story of an eccentric poodle breeder, Patti (Dot-Marie Jones), who lures a broke college student, Russell (Daniel Doheny), to her remote ranch with a promise of research funding— there’s a catch.

In contrast, Mutter follows a very pregnant woman, Gül (Hazar Ergüçlü), under traumatic circumstances, who gives birth to her first child, which turns out to be not entirely human. Now a newly single mother, she must protect her newborn—an alien-like offspring—by any means necessary.

Mutter: The Diary of a Woman (2026) (L) and Breeder (2026) (R)

Breeder features standout performances from Doheny and Jones, while Ergüçlü’s role in Mutter is definitely worthy of recognition. Breeder and Mutter delve into universal cultural themes; Mutter explores the intense challenges of motherhood through a horror lens, using body horror to enhance the narrative. On the other hand, Breeder creatively engages with its genre while tackling pressing societal issues, centering the film on a dog breeder named Patti, who escalates the concept of breeding by enticing Russell with financial support for his research in exchange for his help with her own breeding endeavors.

Together, Mutter and Breeder spotlight important and relevant topics within a horror context. What’s particularly chilling about these two Escape From Tribeca titles is how they tackle similar themes using different narratives. Mutter delves into bodily horror related to pregnancy during childbirth. At the same time, Breeder provides nail-biting suspense that is both shocking and amusing, exploring the notion of reproduction with a specific focus on {spoiler} intellectual genetics.
